Brightlingsea Regent 2-4 Spurs Legends

The game takes place at Clarence Park, York Road, St Albans, Hertfordshire, AL1 4PL, with kick-off at 2pm. Tickets will, as usual, be on sale at the turnstiles on the day.

The lads are carrying momentum into Sunday’s outing after beating Ridgeons League outfit Brightlingsea Regent 4-2 last Saturday.

Ex-Spurs and Norwich City star Paul McVeigh bagged a brace as the Legends gained a measure of revenge for their 4-2 defeat at Brightlingsea last year by reversing the scoreline upon their return to the Essex club.

Andy Sinton and David Howells were also on the scoresheet in a game which also featured our former midfield dynamo Ruel Fox.

It looked like Spurs could be heading for another defeat when Brightlingsea took the lead in bizarre circumstances after just two minutes. With the visitors having stopped in their tracks due to what they thought was an off-side decision, the Brightlingsea attacker strolled through the statuesque defence and rolled the ball into the net.

The officials, though, were adamant there was no off-side decision and the goal stood.

It took the Legends just four minutes to get back on level terms though. Paul McVeigh latched onto a through ball from Garry Brooke and slotted beyond the goalkeeper and into the bottom corner of the net.

The keeper made a low save to deny McVeigh two minutes later, after a ball in from the right from Ruel Fox.

David Howells appeared to be brought down in the Brightlingsea penalty area on 14 minutes, but Spurs’ claims for a spot kick were waved away by the referee.

There was, however, no question about the penalty awarded to Spurs in the 21st minute, from which the visitors took the lead. Fox was clearly dragged down by the arm of an opponent as he tried to latch onto Brooke’s pass, with Howells sending the keeper the wrong way from 12 yards as he fired high into the net.
Three minutes later, Andy Sinton fed McVeigh, who fired over the top from a tight angle.

Howells had the ball in the net again soon after following a delightful sequence of passing, but an early off-side flag denied him his second goal of the afternoon.

McVeigh and Howells both had close range efforts blocked on the line in quick succession, before Sinton volleyed over the bar as the first half came to a close.

Brooke fired just over the bar from a 20-yard free kick three minutes after the interval, before Brightlingsea hauled themselves back level with a low shot on 52 minutes.

Spurs goalkeeper Gareth Howells made a fantastic one-handed save to deny Brightlingsea shortly afterwards, before Fox produced a low save from Howells’ opposite number at the other end.

The visitors were again indebted to keeper Howells as he kept out a header at point blank range a fewminutes later, while McVeigh was denied at the other end by the grounded Brightlingsea stopper.

Tottenham finally regained the lead on 81 minutes when Sinton finished off a three-man move involving Fox and McVeigh with a low shot that crept into the far bottom corner.

The win was wrapped up two minutes later when McVeigh skipped in behind the defence and clipped the ball beyond the goalkeeper to seal a hard-fought victory.

Spurs Legends: Gareth Howells, Paul Miller, Tony Galvin, Andy Edmonds, Stuart Nethercott, Garry Brooke, Ruel Fox, Mark Falco, Andy Sinton, David Howells, Paul McVeigh. Subs: Trevor Wilkinson, Micky Jarrett, Micky Southam.

Foundation recognised at Beyond Sport Awards

Beyond Sport, the global organisation that promotes, develops and supports the use of sport as a tool for positive change across the world, has unveiled the official shortlist for the summit that will take place in July.

We have been nominated in the ‘Sport Team of the Year’ category alongside NBA giants Boston Celtics and Memphis Grizzlies, the North Queensland Rubies from Australia’s Remote and Indigenous Hockey development programme, and fellow Premier League outfit Queens Park Rangers.

To be nominated in this category, candidates had to display going beyond addressing increased participation levels and focusing on major issues occurring within their communities.

Nominees also had to show the full scope of their ‘sport-for-development’ work and a strong connection with the community.

The Tottenham Hotspur Foundation has employability at its core, delivering a ‘cradle to career’ approach as its driving ethos.

Since being granted independent charitable status at No.10 Downing Street in early 2007, the Foundation has created 1.5 million sporting opportunities for people in the Club’s local community.

At present, 48% of the Foundation’s coaching workforce have previously been participants on community programmes that have changed the lives of so many.

These innovative programmes engage young people from classrooms in local Primary and Secondary schools through to Further and Higher Education and leading on to employment.

In doing so, the Foundation reaches some of society’s most hard-to-reach young people, such as Children in Care and those classified as ‘NEET’ (Not in Education, Employment or Training) after leaving compulsory education.

The Foundation gives these young people the skills needed to gain future employment through:

- running intervention programmes aimed at school children with the lowest self-esteem and attainment levels
- giving over 6,000 children the chance to study at White Hart Lane’s Spurs Learning Zone
- teaching school children how to run a business using the model of a professional football club through the Enterprise Academy
- giving budding footballers classified as ‘NEET’ the opportunity to study BTEC and NVQ qualifications while receiving Academy-standard coaching at college, through the Sports Industry Award-nominated Football & Education Development Centre programme
- working with local authorities to signpost young people in care or care leavers to the E18HTEEN project, where they are given an individually tailored learning and development programme with Jermain Defoe acting as a positive role model
- becoming the first ever professional football club to offer a Degree course in partnership with a University.

In total, 30 projects from nearly 40 different countries representing more than 20 different sports have been shortlisted for the Beyond Sport Awards, chosen from a total of 322 entries from 135 countries.

By reaching this stage of the judging process, each project has secured an invitation to attend the fourth annual Beyond Sport Summit, taking place from July 23rd to 25th in London. Throughout the Summit, the shortlisted projects will have the opportunity to interact with Beyond Sport’s extensive network of corporate business, government, philanthropy, international aid organisations and sporting federations, all with the ability to significantly impact the reach and capabilities of the sport and development movement.

The Beyond Sport Award winners, to be selected by the panel of Beyond Sport Ambassadors, will then receive a substantial package of business support to help them grow and become sustainable in the future.

Nick Keller, the Founder of Beyond Sport, commented: “The Beyond Sport Awards unearth leaders using sport as a tool for positive change and provide them with the resources, platform, contacts and opportunities to turbo-charge their growth and impact. We are delighted to reveal this year’s shortlist, which comes after many hours of deliberation from more than 25 experts in their field. To be chosen from more than 300 entries for a place on this shortlist represents a fantastic achievement on the part of all these projects.”

Scott ’sets benchmark’ – Gareth

The England international was an instant hit after joining us from West Ham at the end of the summer transfer window.

That was reflected in him being named Player of the Month by fans voting on Facebook, Twitter and Xtra for his first three months at the club.

His performances have been rewarded with a Player of the Season double from our One Hotspur Members and Supporters Clubs.

”What you see is what you get with Scott and that’s 110 per cent in evey game,” said Gareth, who picked up the One Hotspur Junior Members Player of the Season Award on Sunday.

”He sets the benchmark for the rest of the team.

”He’s full of energy, great on the ball and is an example to the rest of the team both in matches and training.”

With so much attacking prowess in the team, Gareth was quick to underline the value of both Scott and Sandro in the deeper midfield role, the Brazilian outstanding in Scott’s injury absence as we secured fourth place in the final four matches of the season.

”They are the grafters, they break up everything, close down everything and they do all the dirty work that goes unseen,” added Gareth. “They’ve both been fantastic.”

E18GHTEEN achievements recognised

The FromCare2Work Quality Mark, managed by Catch22’s National Care Advisory Service, recognises local authorities and employers who are committed to improving the employability opportunities offered to care leavers and to develop their experience of the world of work.

Tottenham Hotspur Foundation has a proud history of work in this area, most recently through Jermain Defoe’s E18HTEEN project.

E18HTEEN sees the striker act as an ambassador and positive role model to 16-19 year olds in care or care leavers identified by the local authorities of Barnet, Enfield, Haringey and Waltham Forest.

Jermain was present to accept the Quality Mark on behalf of the Foundation alongside two E18HTEEN participants, Charlotte and Finnean, who have both achieved qualifications and employment through the project.

Speaking at the event, Jermain said: “The hard work that has been put in over the past year is paying off. E18HTEEN is something that is close to my heart, giving something back and helping young people by trying to get them to do something constructive with their lives. It’s something I have enjoyed doing and today was special.

“The whole team behind the project have worked extremely hard and the participants themselves have given their all. Charlotte and Finn were here today and just seeing how happy they are is fantastic because they have a goal in life now and know exactly what they want to achieve. It’s so important.”

Tim Loughton said: “I congratulate Tottenham Hotspur Football Foundation on gaining the Quality Mark for their outstanding work with children leaving care in Barnet, Enfield, Haringey and Waltham Forest.

“Leaving a foster placement or children’s home and stepping out into the adult world is understandably daunting for many young people. It’s vital they get help to gain the skills and training they need to find a job and make their way in the world.”

Young people leaving care face significantly harder challenges in securing training and work opportunities. They are less likely to achieve good GCSEs at school and may need extra help to gain the skills they need to do well.

The most recent statistics show that 13.9 per cent of looked after children achieve good GCSEs (A*-C) in English and mathematics, compared with a national average of 58.6 per cent.

E18HTEEN addresses this by offering an individually tailored learning and development programme with free access to 18 separate training and life skills workshops and 18 different sports.

Tottenham Hotspur Foundation becomes only the third organisation to receive the From Care2Work Quality Mark, alongside York Marriott Hotel and the National Housing Federation.

Tottenham Hotspur’s Ledley King set for another knee operation

• Spurs captain to start new contract talks
• King’s current deal ends this summer

The Tottenham Hotspur captain, Ledley King, will have another operation on his troublesome knee this week and then start negotiations with the club over prolonging his 14-year spell at White Hart Lane.King’s chronic knee injury has restricted him to 23 starts this season.

Although that represents a significant improvement on the nine appearances he made last season, when he was also troubled by a groin injury, the Spurs club captain’s future is still shrouded in doubt.

The 31-year-old’s contract expires this summer and the defender himself admits he has no idea whether this season will have been his last at the club he joined in 1998. “Now the season is done I am sure there will be some talks,” King said. “To be honest, I am not entirely sure what’s going on [in terms of a contract offer], I have just wanted to concentrate on trying to play and get my knee right.”

King barely trains with his team-mates due to a problem which causes his knee to balloon every time he plays. The problem is so severe that King has to apply huge ice packs to the area after exercise and he cannot even have a kickabout with his children. After an encouraging start to the season, he ended up missing the club’s last four games after taking a knock to his knee in training but hopes to be back to his best after his operation.

“I will have a little clean out, maybe in the next couple of days,” King said. “It’s something I had earlier in the season. I missed the first few games when I had an operation and hopefully it’s not something serious. It is something I will have done and hopefully it won’t set me back too much. I hope I will be able to have a good season with the knee cleared out.”
